Year in Review: Playing Chicken with Sea Lions

A collage of images of me playing chicken with sea lions in the Galapagos in 2016.Check out the video to see what happened!
It happened so fast, I stopped in my tracks and screamed! I noticed something big and dark blitzing right toward me!

Hang on. I’m getting ahead of myself.

2016 has seen more than its fair share of tragedy and death but 2016 was personally AMAZING! Those of you who know me know that if I had an unlimited source of money and no responsibilities, I’d pack a very tiny bag and perpetually travel the world! Well, this year had some bucket list items for sure! Here’s a recap:
Group photo at Machu Picchu in 2016.
There’s so many wonderful memories, let alone travel memories, but the one moment that takes the cake for me is snorkeling with the sea lions in the Galapagos

As it turns out, sea lions in the Galapagos love to play chicken, so they dart at you, then at the very last second, turn their bodies to avoid collision. You can’t help but laugh as they spin around and do this again and again!

They nibble and investigate bright colors! Your fins, cameras, and even bathing suits if you’re not wearing a neutral color are fair game, so be very careful with swimwear selections!

One of our friends, Cathy, borrowed her brother’s GoPro and managed to get this video which shows just how playful and inquisitive they are! Here’s the video:
What I loved most about this year was all the great people I get to share these memories with. Who do you want to remember this year and all the years to come? Schedule a portrait session in the new year!

Galapagos Island of Santa Cruz

A second video from the Galapagos islands. This one was filmed on Santa Cruz Island. There was an awful lot of giant Galapagos tortoise mating on this island for both captive and wild tortoises. We visited Charles Darwin Research Station, hiked around the miconia forests in the highlands and went into a lava tube. Animals spotted included: frigatebirds, sea lions, sharks, pelicans, and the Galapagos tortoise.

Enjoy!

Galapagos Island of Espanola

I'm back! As you may know, I've been out of the country for the past few weeks and vacationing in Peru and Ecuador. The highlights of the trip have been visits to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos islands. Pretty awesome, right?

I also used it as an excuse to pick up a GoPro Hero4 Session so I can start venturing into the world of videography. Towards that end, I'm putting together some videos of the trip. Here's my first attempt at making a video, using footage from our tour group's visit to the island of Espanola in the Galapagos.

Enjoy!

How Negative Fill Can Add Dimension & Contrast to Your Lighting

Negative fill is using the absence of light by flagging, or blocking the light source. This is another useful technique for creating the image you want. This video from Indie Cinema Academy covers the concept very well, and negative fill is one of many different ways to harness the power of light -- important skills to have as a photographer!

These tips will allow you to harness the power of light for your headshots, family portraits or outdoor photo sessions.
